    Humans are highly adaptable and we have always been creatures of habit. So it’s not a question of “if”, but rather of “how” we can develop good habits in the most timely manner possible.

    One of the problems we face when developing good habits is that we get comfortable with the routines we do every day. We often stick to our daily routines absent-mindedly without considering whether those routines are good or bad. At the back of our minds, we think that because we’ve grown accustomed to doing these things, there is no reason to change.

    Unfortunately, not all habits we have are healthy. For example, turning to consume alcoholic drinks or smoking to relax or relieve stress. This is not a healthy habit, this will adversely affect your health. Do you binge-watch your favorite TV shows at night and munching on chips has become a habit? If this is done habitually, it can lead to poor health.

    The first step to breaking off bad habits is to learn to recognize that they are bad. Where do we begin?

    According to experts, it takes about 21 days to form a habit or break one. In the span of 3 weeks, you can create new habits that will affect how you live. Simple habits such as getting up earlier, exercising each morning, listening to music or podcasts during a commute, or going to bed at a certain time are all doable if you just set your mind to it.

    Identify your habits – the good and the bad

    Most of the time, we don’t realize that the habits we have are bad for us. This is the first step in developing good habits – to identify the bad ones. Be aware of your routines, of what you do the moment you wake up, when you get home from work, or when you go to bed at night. Are you winded out after a few flights of stairs? Maybe it’s because of a bad habit like smoking or your lack of exercise. Are your finances in disarray? Maybe it’s because of your bad habit of spending more than you earn. It’s time you reflect and examine your habits.

    Make A Decision

    Be decisive and make a clear decision that you are going to pursue a new habit that will improve your being. Positive behavior will affect your journey. If you want to wake up early, set your alarm clock. If you want to be physically active, put on your exercise clothes, and begin your session.

    Be Committed

    Do not procrastinate. Once you’ve decided to make a change, be committed. Don’t let your laziness get the best of you. Put your mind to it, and just do it!

    Tell others about your new journey

    To hold yourself accountable as you develop good habits, tell your family and friends that you are practicing a new habit or behavior. Having others know what you’re up to will make you more disciplined and determined because you know that they are watching you. You don’t only have your expectations, you will also be driven by theirs.

    Be Prepared with triggers and obstacles

    Prepare yourself with the possible triggers and obstacles that you are going to experience. Be aware of your habits. There will be moments of weakness when you will need to release your frustrations. Rather than turning to alcohol, drugs, smoking, or stress eating, find a healthy alternative to your usual way of dealing with stress.

    Create an Affirmation

    Create an affirmation that you’ll be repeating to yourself over and over. This will help increase the speed of your habit development. Affirmations give your mind the little push it needs to prepare your body for the things you need to do. For example, you want to wake up early every morning. A simple affirmation you can repeat to yourself at night can be “I will wake up and get up at 6 AM.”

    Persistence is Key

    Developing a new behavior is not automatic but with dedication and persistence, developing good habits are possible.

    Reward yourself for a job well done

    Reward yourself after successfully practicing a new habit. It’s important to recognize the efforts you’ve made to improve and make yourself better. This will reaffirm and reinforce yourself to keep doing the new good habit you’ve developed.

    Good habits are beneficial for you. No one can make you do it but yourself and so, in seeking improvements within yourself, it’s important to look at the basic routines you do in your life. Good habits keep your mind and body healthy, and it gives you a more positive outlook in life. Seeking personal developments is a journey you go through to make yourself better.

    One thing that will greatly affect how you think and how you see life is by having the right people beside you. Being around the right people will make you see your strengths and weaknesses and develop your sense of courage to improve your own personal growth.

    When I was 12, I met someone who I admired because of her self-confidence. She became my best friend and I learned how to appreciate my strengths and build my self-esteem through doing more on what I was best at.

    Surrounding yourself with positive people will be good for your mental and emotional health.

    Accept your mistakes and learn from them

    We all make mistakes, and this is how we learn how to live through life. Mistakes are what make us better, so don’t let them discourage you from wanting to do better. The building block behind every self-confident person is the mistakes they’ve made throughout their journey to become what they are today.

    They learned how not to repeat those mistakes again and in doing so, they progress through their lives and thereby building their self-esteem as they now know better than before.

    Don’t take your mistakes as negatives, but rather as learning opportunities, as chances to improve yourself more.

    Take care of your physical and mental health

    Taking care of yourself is a huge part of building self-confidence. Having a sound body and mind helps you think more positively of yourself, hence the better you develop your self-esteem. Pay attention to your personal hygiene and eat healthily.

    Wear clothes that make you feel great and exercise daily. Take the time to also look at your mental health. Avoid stress by doing the things you love. Don’t overwork and don’t push your body to its limit. Get enough sleep at night and develop a great morning routine when you wake up.

    Define the things that truly matter to you

    What are your priorities? What are the goals that you want to achieve in your life? Which things matter the most to you? When you have a fully-defined set of priorities, it will make you focus on achieving those things. Did you know those achievements give you a sense of accomplishment? This will help you build up your confidence and make you feel good and proud of yourself.

    Celebrate your big and small wins

    Allow yourself to relish in the good deeds you’ve done and the achievements you’ve made. Celebrate yourself for being able to hurdle a problem, for solving a crisis, for helping out a friend, or for even just waking up in the morning after having a good night’s rest. Once in a while, you are allowed to indulge yourself with something that you enjoy. Perhaps a good cup of coffee from that overpriced cafe? Or a relaxing spa day at your favorite salon? Treat yourself, you deserve it.

    Practice Personal Affirmations

    Personal affirmations are statements that you create that affirms your worth. Practice telling these affirmations to yourself repeatedly. Your body will eventually catch up with your brain, and the positive affirmations you tell to yourself will come naturally. For starters, say “I am” instead of “I will be”, and use positive language like “I am smart”, rather than “I am not dumb”.

    Listen to your doubts but don’t let them define you

    We all have doubts and that is normal, but it’s important not to let these cloud our vision and devour us. Building self-confidence is getting over self-doubts. Know your strengths and weaknesses, work on what you are good at, and celebrate your individuality.

    The doubts we feel are there to keep us grounded, but it doesn’t mean that they can tie us down. Take the time to understand what you are doubtful about yourself and work your way up from there. You know you can overcome them when you just put your mind into it.

    Be yourself

    This last item may be overused, but it’s still the best advice I got that’s why I am including it here.

    Be your natural, awesome self. Don’t hide your personality and pretend to be someone else. You will just have a hard time if you do this. Be yourself, no matter how weird you can be, or how awkward you may think you can be.

    Being yourself will attract people who are similar to you, who have the same values as you, and by having these people who have the same wavelength as you will help you determine who you truly are. This will help you strengthen the new confidence you’ve found within yourself and it will help you continue building it up.

    Confidence is the outcome of the thoughts that we think and the actions that we take. Having confidence is being able to get through difficult times. Remember, building self-confidence is not achieved overnight, it’s a state of mind. Manage your habits and practice doing things that will help you boost your confidence.     Success. How do you begin defining this? To different people, this word means a lot of things, but what success means to me may not be the same for you. So, what does it take to be successful in life? How do you define your own success?

    If we look into the dictionary, success is defined as “an accomplishment to one’s goal”, meaning success is something that is about the outcome we want to have in our life.

    What do you want to achieve? What do you want to get out of your life?

    Here are 5 steps to help you define your own success:

    Ask Yourself the Question

    Here we are again, asked with a question that may seem simple enough at first glance, but can be very complex once you really think about it. Whatever comes into your mind, jot it down. Write it in a piece of paper or type it in your phone’s note app. Think about what success looks like for you, whether it’s bold and grand or simple and humble. Anything goes.

    Define Your Own Success

    Ignore What Other People May Think

    Step two is crucial and where it gets kinda difficult.

    Some people won’t agree about what you would consider success is for you. Some, or even most people view success as being measured up against each other. This can start as early at home as we’re being compared to our siblings, our cousins, or even our neighbors.

    This mentality of being compared to someone who has slightly “more success” than we do creates a barrier, a feeling of inferiority, that we have to measure up with them so we would be as “successful” as they are.

    The truth is, other people’s success is different from ours. Other people’s success doesn’t matter. Their success is not your success. Success is not measured in how much money you have or how many sports cars you own; it’s about what you truly want out of life.

    Only you can define your own success, and if it’s about more money or fame or prestige you want, then have at it. Just make sure that it’s something that you wholeheartedly want and not just because it’s what others have. If these things make you happy then go for it!

     

    Be Specific

    In this third step, I want you to go in-depth with what is it that you want. You’ve listed down what success is for you, now it’s time to look further into it.

    Create a scene in your head and expand on that main idea.

    For example, you want to be successful in a particular hobby, let’s say calligraphy. How much time are you willing to invest in this hobby every day? What time of the day are you going to sit down and practice your strokes? Are you willing to spend on the materials that you are going to use? Do you want to learn by enrolling in some online classes or joining in workshops? Do you want to earn in this hobby? And so on.

    The more specific you are with what you want to achieve, the more attached and determined you are to it. It will become a focus and part of your life that even when times get tough, you will allow yourself to whether the odds by not giving up because you are passionate enough to persevere.

    Make A Plan

    Oftentimes, we tell ourselves that this is what we want but not doing anything to make it happen. Success does not happen overnight, you have to work for it. Make a plan, manage your time better, and take action. What are the things you need to do to get closer to achieving your dream? Go for it, step by step. It doesn’t matter how long the journey is as long as you make the effort, no matter how small, to reach for your goals.

    Make it Happen

    Now that you have clearly defined what success means to you, it’s time to make it happen. You got this!

    The meaning of success is unique to each person. I know the definition of success for me, but I can’t tell you what it is because that is for you to decide.

    Learn to accept that you cannot do everything by yourself, hence you’ll need to learn how to delegate. Use other people’s strengths and let them do the things that you’re not very good at.     It’s okay to accept tasks that you know you can handle, but if you find yourself swamped and stressed out about how you are going to finish everything on your plate, learn how to decline and say no. You can only take on so much work. Be realistic with yourself and honest with others.

    Now, assess your life if you’ve been doing the things that will get you closer to your goals.

    Here’s the hard part to swallow: If the actions toward those goals bore you, doesn’t inspire you, or makes you procrastinate, then maybe you have the wrong set of goals. Maybe your priorities have changed. And maybe, it’s time to change your goals as well.

    Don’t be too hard on yourself. Your goals can be as simple as finishing a book by the end of the month or saving up a certain amount of money by the end of the year. Or it can be as ambitious as growing your small business twice by the next 6 months or getting to travel to 5 countries in a year. With the right mindset and attitude towards what you want to achieve, you will surely get to your feet and start doing what you need to do to reach your dreams.

    We tend to be harder on ourselves so the chances of winning these comparison contests are slim to none. This will not only create an inferiority complex when someone else’s output is greater than yours, but it will also hinder you from appreciating the good things you can do because you are only focusing on the negative things.

    The best thing to do here is maybe just to compare your present self from your past self. This will be a healthier option because you can surely have a clear indication of your progress.

    Embrace slow progress

    Progress is still progress, no matter how slow it is – as long as you are going in the right direction. If this is how you move, embrace it. There’s no need to hasten. Slow and steady does it.

    Be around people who make you feel good

    Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Be with people who make you want to pursue your goals and to just do better in general. Sometimes, all we need are encouraging words to help keep us going.

    Celebrate your successes (however small they are)

    Did you finish the book you intended to finish by the end of the week? Hit the target number of followers you’ve been aiming to have since last month? Did you manage to finish the essay you’ve been stuck on writing since this morning? Congratulate yourself on a job well done! Big successes start will small ones. Hitting your smaller milestones is an indication that you are getting closer to hitting your big ones so, of course, it’s a valid reason to celebrate! Give yourself a pat in the back for persevering and for doing your best!

    Lighten up!

    Don’t take everything too seriously. Yes, I’m serious. Smile, lighten up a little bit. After all, c’est la vie! And it’s the only one you’re gonna have. A bad day does not equate to a bad life. You may have had a bad day today but that’s why there’s always a tomorrow, right? So you can try again and do better.

    Let yourself go through the ups and downs because this is how you can truly appreciate and savor the moment when you finally get to reach that goal of yours.
